After reports of gunshots and explosions in the capital city, the Indian Embassy in Khartoum has advised Indians living in Sudan to stay inside. This follows the fighting that broke out between paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo and military boss Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Saturday. The planned merger of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) into the regular army has been escalating tensions between the two. Confrontations, loud explosions, and gunshots have all been reported by witnesses close to an RSF facility in south Khartoum.
Gunfire was reported in the area around the airport, near Burhan’s home, and in Khartoum North as the RSF claimed to have gained control of the airport. The Nile bridges that connect Khartoum with Omdurman and Khartoum North, two of Khartoum’s sister cities, have been sealed off by troops.
The Janjaweed militia, which was used against non-Arab ethnic minorities in western Darfur in the early 2000s and was accused of war crimes, gave birth to the RSF.

Former Sudanese President Omar al-rule, Bashir’s which was overthrown by the army in 2019 after a month of widespread protests, was revived as a result of the 2021 coup, which Daglo has previously called a “mistake” that failed to bring about change in Sudan.
