Tan Zhongyi used the Colle-Zukertort system in the championship match, which is uncommon in top-level competition but quite common at the club level.

She had never used this variation in more than 600 official tournament games when playing White, thus it was a dangerous move. Lei Tingjie responded swiftly, displaying good opening preparation and a creative thought (7…g6!?). This move gave her the initiative on the kingside and triggered a risky pawn avalanche on the kingside.

When Tan Zhongyi moved 21.g3?, defying the cardinal rule of placing pawns in front of the king needlessly, the game’s turning point unintentionally occurred.

This move was soon seized upon by Lei Tingjie, who skillfully responded with 21…Nd8!! to draw attention to White’s newly discovered flaws in her castled king position. The result of this manoeuvre was that all of Black’s pieces surrounded White’s king. Lei Tingjie prevailed as the onslaught finally burst through.
